Former WRFL identity, administrator and coach, Graeme “Creamy” Davis will be honoured in the inaugural Williamstown Walk for Men’s Health event on Sunday November 16.
Playing junior football for A.N.B.Y, Graeme continued his passion for football with Sunshine and Yarraville VFA in the mid 1980s, before recruited as a senior coach of the Glen Orden Football Club, where he lead the Hawks to its first premiership in 1992.
A great supporter of football in the west, Graeme sponsored many clubs including Williamstown, Werribee and Glen Orden and had a close association with the Spotswood Football Club coaching his son Spencer as a junior.
Establishing Glen Orden’s first Auskick Clinic during his time as president in 2010, Graeme sadly passed away from bowel cancer at age 51 two years later.
In honour of her husband, Jo Davis decided to create the Walk for Men’s Health event to not only support men’s health, but to remember those still fighting cancer.
“The whole idea for the walk is to not only create awareness for men’s health, but is also a way for people to commemorate the husbands, fathers, sons and brothers who have, and are battling with men’s health issues,” Jo said.
With hundreds of locals expected to hit the pavement from 8am, Jo hopes the event will urge men of all ages to be more diligent with their health.
“Graeme was a fitness fanatic and lived life to the full, so to have him taken away at such a young age was devastating,” she said.
Beginning at Burbank Oval, participants will walk along the strand in the 8km trek, past the bay and back to the Williamstown Football Club.
With special guests George Calombaris, Barry Michael, Ted Whitten, Chris Grant and Mick Martyn joining in the festivities; Jo is calling on all locals to get involved.
“All men, women, children and even pets are welcome to get involved in the day for just $20.”
Despite Graeme’s battle with bowel cancer, Jo said that all money raised from the event will go directly to WRFL community partner, the EJ Whitten Foundation.
“The EJ Whitten Foundation do a fantastic job in raising vital funds for men’s health, particularly in the west, so all funds raised from the Walk will go directly to them,” she said.
