Dual Barry Priest Medalist and St.Albans favourite Tim Jenkins will captain the WRFL senior interleague squad as it prepares to battle the Eastern Football League in the AFL Vic Metro Championships on Saturday March 28.
Officially appointed with the captaincy on Monday night, Jenkins said he was honoured to be selected for the role and for the opportunity to represent his club and the league.
“I feel extremely lucky to be acknowledged in this position as the group is full of leaders, so I'm sure to get a lot of support from them on game day.
“It’s something l take pretty seriously and I want to make sure I do the job well.”
Having chalked up nearly 300 career goals, the one-club player has had a football career few can attest to in the WRFL.
Among the 26-year-old’s accolades include six consecutive Division One Team of the Year selections, back-to-back Barry Priest medals (2010, 2011), a club Best and Fairest and captain of the St.Albans Football Club.
After a dynamic display seen in the 2014 Metro Championships, Jenkins is no stranger to representative football, named as one of three WRFL players to be selected in the AFL Vic Metro Squad last year.
Selected as the co-captain of the league’s successful 36-point win over the Southern Football League last season, Jenkins said the talent in this year’s interleague group is second to none.
“It’s been pretty exciting as we have added some really good talent to the group.
“We had a real focus on mateship and bringing the group together last year and have taken the same approach this time around.
“The boys get along well together which makes training enjoyable and everyone is up for a chat and a joke which is good.”
Joining Jenkins in the leadership group are Altona captain Jordan Robbins and Hoppers Crossing captain Matthew Ryan as Vice Captains.
“Robbo and Dimma are two guys who were apart of interleague squad last year and two guys I get along really well with,” Jenkins said.
“They have both been a good support to the players and see the benefit of interleague to promoting the talent in the league and promoting the WRFL as a whole.”
While the EFL may be the more fancied pick after winning the pair’s last encounter in 2001, Jenkins said the WRFL is primed to re-write the record books.
“We have selected a really talented side and will enjoy competing against the EFL on Saturday.
“Our strengths will be our even spread of talent over the ground, how quickly we have developed as a playing group through our preparation and our defensive acts.”
The AFL Vic Metro Championships will kick off this Saturday (MArch 28) at IKON Park (Carlton North) with the EDFL v SFL at 11am, followed by the EFL v WRFL at 1:10pm and finishing with the VAFA v NFL at 3:25pm.
Tickets can be purchased at the gate on the day starting from $10 for adults, $5 for concession/ pensioners and children under 16 are FREE.
The final WRFL interleague squad will be released to the public on Wednesday March 26 via our website www.wrfl.asn.au
