Nine Western Region Football League players have been selected in the initial AFL Vic Metro representative squad which will take on AFL Queensland on Saturday June 7.
The selection follows the AFL Victoria Metropolitan Championships earlier this year, where the WRFL took on the Eastern Football League in the 3 v 4 clash.
Despite going down to the EFL by 34-points, the talent in the WRFL didn’t go unnoticed, with an equal amount of representatives in the initial Vic Metro Squad as the number one ranked Victorian Amateur Football Association.
Reigning back-to-back premiers Deer Park has four players selected in the squad including Kwame McHarg, Jackson Purton-Smith, Tim Quick and Rhett King.
Five other Division One clubs also have representatives selected, with tall man Jayden Post (Altona), Murray Boyd (Spotswood), Wayde Skipper (Hoppers Crossing), Andrew Panayi (Werribee Districts) and captain Tim Jenkins (St.Albans) named in the initial 42-man squad.
WRFL representative coach Brett Jacobs said to have nine players named in the preliminary squad was a reflection of the quality of footballers produced in the league.
“I’m really proud for the nine guys named in the initial squad and extremely happy for the league in general to have a high amount of representatives involved really speaks volumes for our reputation as a competition.
“All nine of the guys named were among the top contributors in the senior interleague carnival last month so it’s a great opportunity for them to be part of the experience.”
Making up the rest of the squad are eight Northern Football League representatives, seven from the Eastern Football League, six from the Essendon District Football League and three from the Southern Football League.
“From the outside, it may be a surprise for some to see that we have an equal amount of representative players named as the number one ranked VAFA competition, but the talent in our league is second to none,” Jacobs said.
“Obviously the boys have a fair bit of work to do to make sure their names are in the final squad heading to Queensland, but I know them all quite well and know that they are well and truly up for the challenge.”
The final Vic Metro Squad will travel to Brisbane during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend to take on a team comprising of players from the North East Australian Football League, combined with the best from the Sunshine State’s community competitions.
The match at Burpengary will offer players a chance to don the Big V jumper and an opportunity to play alongside some of the best community players in Metropolitan Melbourne.
