Read all about the event below:
I recently attended the Newport Power Junior Football Club’s 10 Year Anniversary, celebrating a decade of footy as a reformed club after the closure of the old Newport Football Club.
Around 300 people were in attendance at the old Newport Power Substation where a lovely meal, awards and dancing were had.
In 2005, the Newport Power Football Club started out with just 70 people and two teams.
Fast forward a decade and today they have over 700 members competing in netball and football teams. Situated in a very multicultural area, the club has become a great meeting place for all young men and women, where they can enjoy each other’s company on and off the field.
The much celebrated Martyn family, who have been great long time Newport people were amongst the award recipients on the night. Helping the club get back on its feet in the early days, Newport’s oval is named after Bryan Martyn, father of current Club President Stephen. Bryan’s other son Mick, a North Melbourne grand final winner, is another big supporter of the Newport Power Football Club and was in attendance to see his brother Stephen receive a Life Membership.
Another great worker, Kate Matherson, Vice President (finance) was also given due recognition on the night for her work at the club and making the night possible. Kate’s work is done with love and passion for the cause, to make this community club run as smoothly as possible.
I would like to say a hearty well done on behalf of the WRFL Board and competing clubs, a great community effort by all involved.
Terry Mc Garity
WRFL Board Member.
