WERRIBEE Districts have claimed second position on the ladder after defeating Deer Park by 11-points in a tight game at John McLeod Reserve.
Deer Park took advantage of a slight breeze to lead by seven points at quarter time before the Tigers kicked three goals to one in the second term to take a four point lead into the main break.
The Lions retook the lead late in the third quarter, kicking the last two goals of the term to lead by two points, setting up an important last quarter.
Both teams went goal for goal in the final term with the lead changing hands several times until goals from Rhys Dodemaide and Aaron Law sealed the 11-point win for the Tigers in the dying minutes of the match.
Gavin Donnon and Mitchell Huxtable were the most influential players for Werribee Districts, with Aaron Law kicking three goals to maintain his spot as the league’s leading goal scorer.
Aaron Scerri played well for Deer Park while Matthew Muscari was brilliant through the midfield and finished the game with two goals.
Hoppers Crossing claimed top spot on the ladder with a comfortable 42-point win over Yarraville Seddon at Yarraville Oval.
After an even first quarter, Hoppers Crossing kicked seven goals to one in the second term and led by 38-points at half time.
Yarraville Seddon came out stronger after half-time, but couldn’t work their way back into the game as Hoppers Crossing ultimately won by 42-points.
Riley Kitchen kicked four goals for the Warriors, with Daniel Tiricola and Jackson Fullerton kicked three each.
Demitri Bolkas was the Eagles’ best while Liam Murray was the team’s only multiple goal kicker with two majors.
Altona worked their way back on the winners list with a 37-point win over Spotswood at Grant Reserve.
The Vikings struggled with accuracy early, but were able to restrict Spotswood to just two goals in the first half, leading by 18-points at half time.
Spotswood managed four goals in the third term but were held scoreless in the last quarter as Altona kicked four goals of their own to claim the 37-point win.
Suren Bowala and Joel Menadue kicked three goals each for the Vikings while Darcy Wilson kicked two for Spotswood.
Round 6 will see Yarraville Seddon try to end Werribee Districts’ winning streak when they travel to Soldiers Reserve.
Spotswood will be looking to end their four game losing streak when they face Hoppers Crossing at McLean Reserve and Deer Park will travel to Grant Reserve to play Altona.
