GIRLS footy will be front and centre in the Western Region Football League next season and over the next few weeks we will be profiling all the clubs who will be fielding teams in our standalone competition.
Today, we get to learn more about the Point Cook Football Club…
The Point Cook Football Club looks set to build on their established girls program next season, with a number of girls committing to the club.
Point Cook’s Jason Ware said the club had recognised the need for a girl’s team a few years ago and took steps to ensure all aspiring footballers have the chance to play the game.
“We had several girls that were too old to play in their respective age boys teams and our close partnership with Auskick centres in the Point Cook area identified an increasing trend in girls attending Auskick,” he said.
“We have an established youth girls program with our numbers growing each year, we have seen the skill level develop significantly with training and playing games in the Youth Girls competition.”
Ware said the club had been encouraged by the number of girls who attended their come and try session earlier this year, with many girls also hitting the track in the pre-season, a positive sign for the Point Cook Football Club.
“With many of our new players just starting out in Australian Rules football, our focus is going to be on fundamental skill development and learning basic team structures to build individual confidence and team cohesion going into the 2017 season,” he said.
The club is hoping to field an Under-12 and Under-18 teams in the WRFL’s standalone girls competition.
Two of the club’s most experienced coaches Adam Erian and Toni Berkin have re-committed to the club.
