Woorabinda State School students are kicking winning goals through their involvement in AFL Queensland's Auskick program along with AFL Capricornia Juniors under 11 competition.
The Central Queensland school has been selected to participate in a Dreamtime game at the Gabba, in Brisbane, on May 26 when the Brisbane Lions play Collingwood.
Team co-coach Andrew Evetts said the school had selected 12 under-12 players for the Brisbane trip which includes playing a game at half time and joining a lap of honour at the start of the match.
Evetts said after the game the players will have the privilege of meeting the Brisbane and Collingwood players.
AFL Queensland's Rick Hanlon (Development Manager Kick Start Program), who is involved with AFL in the State's north, helped organise the Brisbane visit along with AFL Capricornia's Regional Manager Brett Fragiacomo who will travel to Brisbane with the team.
Woorabinda have been invited to participate in the Dream Time match which is part of the AFL's indigenous weekend because they have participated in the AFL Auskick program and thrown their support behind the program, Fragiacomo said.
Woorabinda Council has also put their full support behind a Woorabinda team playing in an under-11 competition in Rockhampton.
The competition is held in Rockhampton about twice a month and also features AFL Capricornia clubs - Brothers, Glenmore, Panthers and Yeppoon.
Each trip the Woorabinda boys and girls leave home at 3pm and return home around 11pm.
"Our students have been doing AFL for the last two years and we thought the time was right to put them in a competition,'' Evetts said.
Evetts said so far the Woorabinda team has won two games and lost one.
"They are enjoying the whole experience of going to Rockhampton to play with kids from other schools and it's been a huge benefit for our children to associate with kids from outside Woorabinda,'' Evetts said.
"This has been a huge benefit for our children to associate with kids from out
"The children have to meet certain disciplinary conditions or they are not able to play the Friday night game.''
Evetts said they were finding this also helped motivate the children to behave and perform better in the classroom.
Woorabinda teachers involved in the program are Andrew Evetts, Tom Kneen, Dan Williamson and Shane Turner.
