Best Players Take Centre Stage

MACKAY'S best young women's basketball players will be on show in a big weekend at Candlestick Park Stadium.

The under-21 women's team takes on Townsville at 6.30pm tomorrow and at 2.30pm Sunday, on a weekend when the north's best young players will also display their talents.

Mackay will field boys' and girls' teams in the under-12 Top of the North, against teams from all over North Queensland.

Former Meteors player Mick Virgo is coaching the under-21 women's team, which will form the core of the Mackay Meteorettes for next season's QBL.

“Mick has come back out of retirement and he's keen to help develop some of our young girls,” Meteors coach Leonard King said.

Virgo will also be assistant coach of the Meteorettes under QBL women's coach of the year from last season, Wade Rebetzke.

While the women have lost both matches so far this season to Townsville, King said the young squad had plenty of talent.

Most were part of the Meteorettes squad this year. They include Riley Smith, Brooke Steindl, Miranda and Chantelle Thomas, Rachel McKenzie, Jessica Healy and Winnie Cook.

Steindl rejoined the Meteorettes last season after a stint of college basketball in Hawaii.

Matches in the under-12 Top of the North will tip off at 8am each day.

“It's the first age group that has representative matches and it's a chance to see our young players coming through,” King said.
