Legend pops up to take reins

Dickerson is yet to sign his name to the Toowoomba Basketball Association contract but is certain to take over the coaching reins from Torben Marcussen as the Mountaineers look to end their streak of two consecutive win-less seasons.

Fellow Mountaineers hall-of-famer Harry Spencer, who has previously coached Toowoomba to consecutive state titles in 1990-91, has signed as the women’s coach for 2011.

Dickerson says he is looking forward to the "big challenge" of plotting a Mountaineers’ revival, but says an import player is vital if Toowoomba is to again become a competitive force.

"If we’re serious about being in the competition and winning then that is the most important thing," Dickerson said.

Dickerson believes he has the nucleus of a strong side and says he will be looking for a ball-handler to complement key players like impressive centre Stephen Kluck.

"I think we are only one import away from being competitive. In my opinion Stephen Kluck is the best big-man in the competition and he has to be utilised," he said. "It’s time to start moving in the right direction. I’m sick of all this losing, so I’ll be trying to get us back to where we should be in the competition."

Meanwhile, Spencer says his focus as coach will be on developing the next generation of Toowoomba talent into competitive QBL players.

Spencer says he will not be looking for an import player to help boost his side’s chances, but will look to recruit players from regional centres like Pittsworth and Dalby.

"Pop and I are coming back into the fold after 20 years playing and coaching to help the program which has been struggling and build a solid base. We kind of feel we need to do this," he said.
