Heat on lookout for basketball talent

IN an unprecedented search for talent the Townsville Heat QBL side will throw open their doors for open trials this month.

New coach Liam Flynn is keen to take a look at anyone who fancies himself as a state league basketballer. It might be a major undertaking for the Townsville Crocodiles assistant coach, but Flynn laughs at the similarities between the trials and the hit reality TV show Football Superstar.

"We could call it 'So you want to be a baller'," Flynn said.

The Heat will open the first three practice sessions of their pre-season for Flynn, his yet to be named assistants and Townsville QBL chairman Mark Wrobel to study all comers.

Interested athletes will need to register online and commit to all three training nights on February 14, 17 and 19 to stand a chance of selection.

Flynn, who is still getting acquainted with the basketball community outside of Crocs' circles, is going in with a broad mind.

"This is for anyone and everyone," he said.

"There are guys that I see at the Crocs, who I know play A-grade basketball and who over the years have pursued their professional careers and probably given up on basketball at this level.

"If they want to give it a crack, then this is it.

"At the junior level it's open for those youngsters, from the under-18s to under-23s who want to see what it takes to make it as a senior."

Flynn is also keen to have an extended squad at the ready for training sessions and to build the program for seasons to come.

To register for the trials, go to the Townsville Heat's Facebook page.
