Meteor Martin Gets National Call-Up

McDonalds Meteors captain Rhys Martin has been added to the Australian Men’s national basketball team (Golden Star Boomers) training camp squad in preparation for the upcoming YouYi Games against China.

The McDonalds Meteors star playmaker received the call up after a number of guards from the initial squad of 16 withdraw due to injuries and unavailability.

The Boomers training camp will be held in Perth from June 19 – 23, with the first game of the YouYi series against China on June 24 in Perth.

The 25-year old guard is going into his 2nd QBL season with the McDonalds Meteors and is excited about receiving the national call-up.

“It was definitely a bit of a shock but I’m thankful for the opportunity to attend the Golden Stars Boomers training camp.” Martin said.

“As a basketball player representing your country is definitely something you strive for and this is the first step for me in reaching that goal.”

"I'm looking forward to training with the top players and coaches in Australia and then bringing that knowledge and those experiences back to our Mackay QBL team," Martin added.

Mackay Basketball General Manager Joel Khalu said it was a tremendous opportunity for Martin to impress at the next level.

"There's no doubt Rhys is an extremely talented player," Khalu said.

"It's great for him that he is now on the national program radar and this camp will do many positive things for his game."

"Obviously this weekend's QBL road games will be more of a challenge for us without Rhys, but were definitely happy for him and we are extremely confident in our team still getting the job done."

The McDonalds Meteors play the Mountaineers in Toowoomba this Saturday night, before facing the Northside Wizards in Brisbane on Sunday afternoon.
