Test for injured Gange

THE McDonald’s Mackay Meteors will gauge the fitness of defensive specialist Matt Gange this morning before making a final decision on his selection for tonight’s QBL contest against Maroochydore at Candlestick Park.

“He is 80% at this stage,” coach Grant Kruger said yesterday.

“He will be given a fitness test (this morning) to see where he is at.

“Obviously we would like to have Matty 100% right next week for the triple header.”

Gange was forced to leave the court late in last week’s win against Bundaberg with a calf muscle injury.

Kruger indicated the Meteors were expected to take a cautious approach with Gange and similarly with Peter Duck, who has been troubled by a thigh strain.

“He has missed the last couple of weeks as well,” Kruger said.

The Meteors will however welcome the return of Australian representative point guard Rhys Martin.

Martin’s return will complement the outstanding form of Brad Rasmussen, Timothy Coenraad, Deba George and Michael Kingma.

The men will tip-off at 7pm and will be preceded at 5pm by the women’s contest between the Meteorettes and Maroochydore.

It’s another important game for the Global Product Search Meteorettes, according to coach Wade Rebetzke.

“We’ve got to try and keep things rolling,” he said.

“Last week was probably our best defensive effort against Bundaberg and we’re just going to continue to try and focus on the defensive end, and let things go from there.

“We’re really looking forward to kicking on with the season and try and improve as a group.”

The Meteorettes will have a full contingent of players available for selection.

“Everyone is ready to go ... all fit and well,” Rebetzke said.

“We’re really looking forward to coming out against Maroochydore and having a real dig.”

The Meteorettes will endeavour to set the defensive tone early.

“If we can do that in the first three or four minutes then I think all things will take care of themselves from there and we can continue to play defence for the rest of the night,” Rebetzke said.

Tami Willey, Fiona McGrath and Rachel Allison again shape as influential scoring contributors for the Meteorettes.

Maroochydore faces a tough ask, having to back up from what is sure to be a physical contest against Rockhampton.

The young Clippers would have gained confidence from last week’s win.
