Mackay teams crush everything in their path

There aren't too many teams in the QBL who have the long and exhausting task of tackling triple headers - most teams north of Gladstone do so strictly for financial reasons.  The Mackay Meteors and Meteorettes do so every year and they recently completed their long weekend of basketball in Brisbane after flying into town on Friday morning.

Everything they touched turned to gold in Round 3 with the Meteors Cook, Fitzgerald and Blanchfield proving their endurance and domination of some of the state's finest athletes from Ipswich, Gold Coast and Northside.  One of the highlights included getting off to a crushing start against the Force where they created a 49-12 lead by the first break before dropping back into first gear to cruise home easy victors (123-84).  In this game, Fitzgerald  managed 23pts, 11rbs, 8asts, 4stls in 25mins, while Cook shot at 75% for a quick 23pts.  Down to 9 players on Saturday night against the Goanna's, the Meteors got the job done from the line where they hit 30 of 34 to the Goannas 11 of 16.  This was quite a feat in itself to go 2 from 2 but the team didn't stop there, as they controlled the Wizards from tip-off through shutting down scoring opportunities and superior ball handling.  Coach King will have nothing but praise for his team who have jumped to 4th place on the ladder at 3 and 1 and in hot pursuit of the unbeaten Marlins and Rockets.

Meanwhile it's all smiles on the Meteorettes home front as well with the team blasting thru their triple header with apparent ease to lead the competition at 4 and 0.  The team powered their way through town and sent dust flying in all directions.  Once it all settled all that was left was 3 undersized opponents and a 41pt average win margin for the weekend.  With Cox (pictured above) and Tolo this team will be unstoppable in '09.
