Basketball stars play for flood aid

THE HERVEY Bay Hurricanes will be doing their best to dunk some much-needed funds into the Bundaberg Basketball Association bank account later this month.

They’ve enlisted the help of some big guns to do it.

The Hurricanes will have former Australian representatives Slammin’ Sam Mackinnon and Scott McGregor in their line-up when they take on Queensland Basketball League team, the Bundaberg Bulls, at the Hervey Bay PCYC on February 26.

The game will help raise funds for the Rum City association after their headquarters were severely damaged during the floods last month.

But it won’t only be Mackinnon and McGregor doing their best to help on the day – an Australian legend and Hall of Famer, Maryborough’s Larry Sengstock, will also be here.

Sengstock, the Basketball Australia chief executive, someone who played in 456 National Basketball League games and 293 games for Australia including four Olympics, would love to play in the game but he’s injured.

Kane Macready will be the captain-coach of the Hervey Bay Hurricanes on the day.

He said he couldn’t wait to suit up for the game.

“We are all very excited to help Bundaberg out after what happened to them,” Macready said.

“Although the two clubs have developed a great rivalry over the past 20 years, we are doing as much as we can to help them through this tough time.

“While this game will be a fundraising event, I can assure everyone that we will be doing our very best to avenge the single point loss we suffered to the Bulls late last year.

“They broke our club record seven-game winning streak.”

As for playing alongside Mackinnon and McGregor, Macready said he was sure it would be a fantastic experience – not just for himself.

“To get the calibre of these players coming to Hervey Bay is great,” he said.

“It’s a really exciting opportunity for all the players to play with and against them.

“It’s also an unbelievable opportunity for Fraser Coast basketball fans to come down and watch possibly the highest level game ever played in the region.

“We are hoping a huge crowd turns up to watch it – an event like this is not to be missed.”

The game tips off at 7pm and admission is $5 for children aged 6-18, $10 for adults, while a family pass is $20.
