Lady Spartans looking to future with appointment of Nikki Bairstow

FORMER Australian Institute of Sport coach Nikki Bairstow has been appointed head coach of the Brisbane Lady Spartans under 23s basketball team.

The under-23s will compete in the Basketball Queensland Development League in 2011.

Bairstow, a former Lady Spartan, played at the highest level coached Mackay in the Queensland State League in 2009 as well as being the assistant coach of the Townsville Fire from 2007 to 2010 in the Women's National League.

Bairstow is an Australian network coach for the under 17 and 19 teams and assistant coach for the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans where she heads up recruitment and player development.

"I am really looking forward to the challenge. I was asked to work with the under 16 team in September last year and that has been great.," she said.

The team will compete against both senior and junior programs from all over south east Queensland on a weekly basis, with many of the players doubling up for the Lady Spartans in the South East Australian Basketball League.

Southern Districts is looking for past and current juniors who are interested in trialling for the team. Positions in the squad will also be offered to talented players from other Associations looking to join what is clearly a program aimed at being the best.
