Mountaineers climb towards peak
A YOUTHFUL Toowoomba Mountaineers women’s side took their first positive step towards the upcoming Queensland Basketball League season with a 68-49 win over Redlands on Saturday.
Lauren Hendry is the only player to return from last year’s Mountaineers side, meaning coach Harry Spencer has had his work cut out for him trying to build combinations in two previous trial matches, losing both.
But things clicked for the Toowoomba girls on Saturday, scoring 45 point in the first half to race out to a sizable lead.
The Mountaineers tired in the second-half, scoring only 23 points, but still ran out convincing winners.
Kristyn Bliss top-scored for Toowoomba with 17 points, while Stacey Richter again impressed scoring 15 points.
With such a young side, coach Spencer is not expecting miracles from his playing group this year.
“Considering we’ve got all Toowoomba players and no imports it’s going to be a huge step up for the girls,” Spencer said.
Specer says the main focus is on building a side to be competitive at this level in the future.
“I have to make them understand the level of basketball we have to play at.”
