Martin is chasing ultimate prize

RYHS Martin wants one more shot at the ultimate with the McDonald's Meteors in the Queensland Basketball League.

After guiding the Meteors to a losing grand final last season against the Rockhampton Rockets while playing virtually on one leg, the talented point guard is fit and raring to go in what shapes as his last season in the QBL.

Martin agreed to terms on Friday for this season, and will join the team in June after a short visit to the United States with his wife.

“It was disappointing the way it finished last season,” he said yesterday.

“I know the new coach Grant Kruger well and we'll be aiming to go one better this season.”

Martin, 25, revealed that this could be his last season playing in the QBL, although he plans to remain in the NBL with the Wollongong Hawks.

“This could be a special season,” he said.

“We'll have some big men in the side in Michael Kingma and Tim Coenraad, who is coming back, and I know there are a few other guys on the horizon.

“Michael is definitely someone we could have used last year.”

Kingma is joining the Meteors from the Rockets, where he was one of the standout players last season, while Coenraad played for the Hawks in the NBL this season.

Martin underwent surgery on his troublesome ankle shortly after the end of the QBL season, taking three months to recuperate.

“I missed almost half of the NBL season and was out for 10 or 11 games,” he said.

“But the leg is good now,” he said.

Martin was named in the QBL All-Star Five last season and is coming off an impressive NBL season, where he has averaged 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 15 games with the Hawks.

Mackay Basketball general manager Joel Khalu said a lot of work had been done to make sure Martin returned to the Meteors.

“Retaining Rhys was definitely a high priority for our club,” Khalu said.

“He has been an outstanding player at this level for many years and he's a true professional. “That's the type of player we want in our program.

“It's a fantastic signing for our organisation as we look to make a legitimate championship run this year.”
