Meteors tip off QBL campaign

GRANT Kruger is a little bit like Oliver Twist.

But instead of wanting “some more”, Kruger wants only “one more”.

One more win than the Mackay Meteors achieved last year.

Last year’s beaten Queensland Basketball League grand finalists launched their 2011 season last night and Kruger spoke highly of his team’s chances to clinch a premiership.

“I only want one more win this season – the grand final,” he said.

“It is a big ask but I honestly believe we have the team to do it.

“I think we have recruited well in the off-season.

“We have re-signed key players from last season and while it is very unfortunate we were not able to bring back Todd Blanchfield we have been able to recruit some very exciting and talented new players to replace him.

“Michael Kingma is one of the best big men around and in Deba George we have one of the most exciting players I have ever seen.”

Kruger said the Meteors’ 2011 assault on the QBL title will be built on the foundation of teamwork.

“On the court I want us to be working as a team.

“If we can do that we will be a success,” he said.

“I built my 14-year NBL career on working for the team and if this side can replicate that we will go a long way.”
