Mountaineers humbled by loss

AFTER winning their first game in two years a week earlier, the Toowoomba Mountaineers men crashed back down to earth with a thud on Saturday night.

The joy of securing their first win since 2009 against Ipswich became a distant memory at the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre as Brisbane handed the Mountaineers a convincing 101-73 defeat in their Queensland Basketball League round two fixture.

The Mountaineers were outscored by Brisbane in every quarter, the Capitals shooting 52.9 per cent from the field while Toowoomba managed to hit only 37.3% of its shots.

Mountaineers coach Pop Dickerson said his team was outplayed by a sharp Brisbane outfit.

“We ran into a team who played better than we did on the night and they might not be the only team that does it to us,” Dickerson said.

“We just got pushed out of everything we wanted to do. They outplayed us is what they did.”

James Legan again led the scoring for Toowoomba with 26 points while Brisbane forward Thomas Garlepp dominated with a game-high 31 points.

The Mountaineers women also struggled on Saturday, going down to Brisbane 74-47. After a disappointing start to the season against Ipswich, the Mountaineers came out firing against their more-fancied opponents and trailed by only two-points at half-time.

But Brisbane pulled away from Toowoomba in the second half, with English import Helen Naylor scoring 24 points for the Capitals.

Olimpiea Hurst and Jennifer Chard were strong for the Mountaineers, scoring 13 and 11 points respectively.
