Bibby has scoring blitz on road

FOR the Port City Power, its results at the weekend’s road trip followed a familiar script: the women winning both games and the men splitting the two.

Taking on Brisbane and Northside on Friday and Saturday night respectively, it was women’s coach Jess Bibby with the hot hand and 79 points for both games, while point guard Keith Borgan got an even 50.

It was hard to choose between Rebecca Haynes and Bibby for player of the match in the Power’s 15-point win over Brisbane.

Haynes delivered a triple double—17 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists—and Bibby top-scored with 44 points to stay entrenched at the top of the leading scorer ladder in the QBL.

After a close first quarter, the girls lit it up in the next 10 minutes for 31 points while restricting Brisbane to 17. From then on it was basically level pegging throughout the second half and another Power win, helped by Diana Neves’ 20 points.

On Saturday night, the Wizards women’s team showed they again didn’t have the magic tricks to surprise the Power and were beaten by 30 points.

Bibby again with 35 points, including four from three-point territory, led the way and the Power’s first quarter put the game out of reach courtesy of a 33-13 opening blast.

Haynes was insurmountable in defence and grabbed 19 rebounds and added 20 points in the victory to round off a stellar weekend personally.

Keith Borgan was the main architect against Brisbane; his 28 points, six assists and four rebounds priceless as they scratched to a four-point victory.

Down by two at the first break, the Power came out and played their best quarter for the road trip, as the offence clicked and they scored 27 points while limiting Brisbane to 16.

The match swung back towards the home team in the third stanza, but the Power were good enough to hang on to a four-point lead.

On Saturday night, it was a 28-18 second quarter by the home team that blew the game wide open, and gave the Power a 15-point deficit at half time. They recovered slightly in the second half but couldn’t peg it back, the third quarter their best for the night outscoring Northside by seven, 17-10. Borgan and James Cripe both finished on 22 points, and led the rebounding with seven and ten apiece.

It was hard going on the boards for the Power, as Northside had three players dragging down ten and game high scorer Shaun Gleeson pulling in eight along with his 31 points.
