Coach lauds tight defence for victory

Daily Mercury 27th June 2011

Coach Wade Rebetzke heralded the defensive efforts of the Mackay Meteorettes following their comprehensive QBL State Championships win against the Bundaberg Bears on Friday night.

Understandably he labelled the 94-66 triumph at Candlestick Park as “a very good win”.

“It was our best team defence performance all year in my eyes,” Rebetzke said.

“It was a very good win.

“The defensive end was the key ... good team defence for 40 minutes.”

The ability of the Meteorettes to hold Bundaberg to just 66 points was a big plus, according to Rebetzke.

“I was very happy with the defensive effort,” he said.

While the sustained defensive efforts of the Meteorettes were outstanding, the home side also showed considerable flair when players found themselves in scoring range.

“A lot of it comes from our defence,” Rebetzke said.

Fiona McGrath was a valuable contributor at both ends of the court for the Meteorettes.

She finished an outstanding allround performance with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Tami Willey (21 points), Rachel Allison (20), Heidi Freeburn (12) and Rylie Smith (10) were other influential contributors.

“It was a true team effort ... everyone contributed,” Rebetzke said.

Bundaberg superstar Yvonne Turner was the game's leading point scorer with 29, but was made to work hard for every point.

Importantly, as far as the Meteorettes were concerned, Turner was the only player in the Bears' camp to reach double figures.

The Meteorettes will now prepare for their next home game against Maroochydore on Saturday night.
