Wollongong Hawks' Rhys Martin savours Boomers experience
Martin made his maiden appearance in the green and gold jersey in the recent two-game series against China after injuries left Brown light on backcourt depth.
Playing a back-up role to Perth's Damian Martin (no relation), the Hawks playmaker averaged about 12 minutes per game and believes he made a solid contribution to the Boomers' two wins.
"I was fairly happy with how I went. I would've liked to shoot a bit better, but that's probably to be expected at this time of the year," Martin said.
One of seven players under contract with Wollongong, Martin is preparing for his fourth season with the club.
While the 25-year-old realises his position in the Boomers depends largely on the availability of other point guards, he doesn't want his international career to be cut short after two games.
"Brett said he was happy with how I went and that's all you can do," Martin said.
"He said he'd call me about the next [training] camp, but whether that's to tell me he wants me there or not, I'll have to wait and see."
Martin said Brown's invitation to join the squad last month came out of the blue.
"I had no idea but they asked if I wanted to come and I jumped at the chance," he said.
"Once I got there and found out a few guys had injuries, I knew it was one of those opportunities that you have to take when it comes. The way the week unfolded, I went okay and felt I was a chance of making it.
"Obviously, I was pretty happy to make the cut and have the chance to play for my country."
Proud Queenslander Martin is back in his home state playing for the Mackay Meteors with Hawks team-mate Tim Coenraad.
The pair will fly back and forth for Wollongong preseason training until the end of the Queensland Basketball League season.
