BUNDABERG Bears made its intention for a spot in the Queensland Basketball play-offs known in a hard-earned defeat of metropolitan powerhouse Brisbane Capitals.

Bears defenders rallied together to weather the attacking might of Capitals forwards and claw their way through a tense first half to secure victory 61-56.

Coach Dean Page commended the defensive efforts of Ash Bailey, Stacey Howard and Keisha Lee in limiting the damage of Capitals’ tall timber.

“For the girls to hold them to 56 points for the entire game is an achievement in itself,” he said.

“There’s not much room for error with a team like that and it took a collective team effort to keep them quiet out there.”

American import Yvonne Turner was the Bears’ top scorer with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bears are now perched comfortably at the top of the Queensland Basketball League central division pool with four points separating them from Northside Wizards.

Page said it was too early to focus on play-offs but believed his team would be competitive.

“We’re certainly well-placed as the competition stands now,” he said.

“If we continue to play the brand of basketball we have been then we will earn our spot.”

Bundaberg Bulls campaigners did not join in the celebrations of their colleagues, suffering a disappointing shock conclusion to their match against Brisbane Capitals.

A three-point basket shot from centre court on the full-time buzzer spoiled the efforts of a determined Bulls outfit in the final quarter.

With the score tied, the match went into five minutes overtime.

Capitals held no punches in the extra-time showdown, assaulting the Bulls goal square in a flurry of offensive attacks.

Capitals scored 10 points in the extra-time period leaving the scoreboard set at 91-81.

Bulls coach Adam Curran said it had been a disappointing end to a tough battle waged by his team.

“We had them and then out of the blue they hit a three pointer,” he said.

“It was disappointing to walk away with a loss after a game like that.”
