Port City too tough for Northside

Gladstone Observer - 31st July 2011

PORT City Power women proved too hard to handle as they defeated Northside 95-68.

This would have been salt to Northside's wounds following its grand final loss to the Power last year.

The team's staggering win can be attributed to its second quarter where it managed to stop Northside from scoring more than eight points while putting away 25 for themselves.

Not even Northside's Katie Harris' 34 points could dampen the Power's spirits.

It was the first game in weeks for player/coach Nat Hurst following her ankle injury and she did not hold back scoring 10 points – reminding everyone how good a player she is.

Hannah Bowley and Bec Haynes maintained their position among the top goal-scorers of the team scoring 25 and 22 respectively. The younger girls in the team were given some great on-court opportunities and made the most of them all, with Tiana Gibson, Belinda Bailey and Madeline Dryburgh all managing to score.

Like the men, the women also play Mackay on Friday night.

This match is destined to be a close one and possibly a preview of this year's grand final as Power is currently first and Mackay second. There will be no rest for the women either, with Saturday night's game against third-placed Bundaberg another tough one.

Both games may be previews of the Power's journey to the finals.
