Cyclones are blowing strong

THE Hog's Breath Cafe Cyclones knew what they had to do to keep their season going and coach Peter Trennery was happy to report they did it well.

It has not been an easy season for the Cyclones with the loss of Tegan Cunningham at a crucial point in their drive to make the final.

However, Trennery looks upon that loss as being a chance for other players to step up, and this they have done with youngster Grace Mcdougall playing her part in the 86-67 defeat of the Mackay Meteorettes.

The Mackay team had been looking for two wins on the trip south but lost against leaders Gladstone on Friday night before meeting the Cyclones at Hegvold on Saturday.

“I think they were a little tired,” Trennery said. “But I was really happy with our girls' effort.”

The coach was also pleased with the crowd support.

“It was good, it was loud,” he said.

Hardly a week goes by without Nicole Romeo stealing the headlines and on Saturday she did again with her match-high of 34 points.

“She's pretty handy,” Trennery said.

In that tally were five three-pointers but the Cyclones can't expect her to get as much room from the three-point line next weekend when the team travels to Mackay for a quarter-final match against the Meteorettes.

Also hitting top form is Louella Tomlinson who scored 20 points for the match and produced a good all-round display.

“It was her best game for us,” Trennery said. “She has come good at the right time and has a lot of talent.”

Morgan Munsen also put in big minutes for the Cyclones while Bianca Abbott's match averages were huge with 77.8% from her field attempts and a perfect record from the free throw line for a match total of 18 points.

Mackay's two stars Tami Willey and Rachel Allison were kept relatively quiet, scoring 20 and 23 points respectively.

After the first quarter, the two teams were level but from there the Cyclones blew the margin out to 19 points by the end.
