LOCAL QBL STARS FACE ST MARY'S CHALLENGE!

Before a QBL finals game even tips off this weekend, McDonalds Meteors and Global Product Meteorettes QBL stars will have another challenge thrown in front of them when they take on the St Mary's Catholic Primary School Basketball team in a fun exhibition game at the school's stadium.

A record crowd is expected to fill the stands at the South Mackay school, as the select team of students take on their local Basketball hero's in what is expected to be an exciting community spectacle.

Mackay QBL players including Rhys Martin, Tim Coenraad, Matt Gange, Rachel Allison & Jacqui Zelenka will form a mixed male & female QBL team and take to the blacktop to line up against a team made up of 6th & 7th grade St Mary's students.

St Mary's Principal Michael Stewart said the kids were very excited to take on their favourite Mackay QBL players.

"These kids really love their Basketball and for them to have the opportunity to play against their local heros in a game in front of the entire school is fantastic," Stewart said.

"The students have been talking about it for weeks and we'll definitely have our whole school and many parents along to watch."

"It's a great initiative and we are very glad the players are taking the time out to do this this week, especially with the QBL finals on this weekend," Stewart added.

Mackay Basketball General Manager said events like this game are a great way for QBL players to engage with the local community.

"Our club has a big goal of having a strong connection to the Mackay & Whitsunday region and regular school visits are definitely a priority for us," Khalu said.

"When we can participate in special games against the local school kids its not only fun for them, but also fun for our players."

"Hopefully it motivates some kids to want to become future Meteors & Meteorettes."

"It's also a great way for us to promote positive messages like eating healthy and being physically active," Khalu added.

The special game tips off on Wednesday at 1:45pm at St Mary's Catholic Primary School, 42 Juliet Street, South Mackay.
