Jess Bibby leads Gladstone Port City Power to QBL three-peat
Queensland Basketball League Player/Coach Jess Bibby of the Canberra Capitals scored 27 points, but it was Jayco Opals squad member and former WNBL star Natalie Hurst who led the way with 35 points in the weekend’s QBL Grand Final against Bundaberg.
The Gladstone Port City Power had been red-hot favourites to win the title for a third time, and after accounting for Ipswich 100-73 in the Semi Final, they realised their dream of three-straight with a 110-97 victory the very next night against Bundaberg.
“It was a very tough match. Particularly after the game both sides had the night before, it's not easy backing up,” player/coach Jess Bibby told The Gladstone Observer.
“Bundaberg played very well and put up a great fight. There were plenty of huge plays ... it was an all-round great game.
“But the effort was well worth it in the end. Our first feeling was relief. We have put all this pressure on ourselves to make it three in a row for Gladstone, and we have finally pulled it off ... all the hard work was for a reason.
“Now we have a break and meet back up in April when we start the pursuit of four in a row.”
Natalie Hurst won the Grand Final MVP, but Canberra Capitals WNBL players Hannah Bowley (16 points) and Rebecca Haynes (16 points), were also key contributors to the victory.
