Toowoomba no match for Young Guns

Ben Drewe | 11th October 2011

QBL talents Stephen Kluck and Shane Davis did the bulk of the damage as full-strength Highfields took advantage of a depleted Toowoomba side to run out 108-74 victors in round six Regional Basketball League action on Saturday.

Toowoomba went into the game at Highfields without its three big guns while the Young Guns had all of the weapons in their arsenal.

Highfields got out to an 11-point lead after the first quarter but the injection of Toowoomba star Mike McDaniel in the second quarter helped stem the tide.

But the Young Guns responded, outscoring Toowoomba 24-12 in the second term to take a 49-26 lead into half-time.

Toowoomba hit back in the third quarter through small forwards Mario Tong, Adam Parsons and Peter Acuil to reduce the deficit by six at the next change.

Any thought of a stunning comeback was quashed by the Young Guns in the final term as Highfields closed out the game for a comfortable 34-point victory.

The involvement of Kluck and Davis proved telling for the Young Guns as Kluck top scored with 30 points while Davis wasn't far behind, posting 29 points.

The win consolidates second spot on the RBL ladder for Highfields behind Warwick.

Toowoomba is stuck in equal third with Tenterfield after round six, with the Bullets having the bye on the weekend.

Highfields now host Tenterfield this Saturday, while Toowoomba takes on Dalby.

In open reserve grade, a strong second quarter from Ben Batistuzzi helped Tenterfield to a 93-59 win over Highfields women last Saturday. The result keeps Highfields win-less while Tenterfield has a 3-3 record.
