King to lead the Wizards

Northside Wizards Basketball today announced they had signed one of Queensland's most respected coaches, Leonard King, to coach their men's team in the Queensland Basketball League for the next 2 years.

The Wizards had been searching for a new Head Coach following the resignation of Paul Haly at the end of last season. "Paul was a great coach and leader of our men's program for the past 5 years and we were disappointed when he advised he was taking a break" offered Chairman Allan Woodford.

"It's now about the future and having Coach King on board supports our aim of providing quality coaches across all Junior & Senior programs. He brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a professional coach. Leonard has a real passion to drive our men's program to a new level of success," Woodford added.

King is no stranger to the QBL, having coached the Mackay Meteors from 2007 – 2010, leading them to 2 consecutive finals appearances for the first time in the club's 25 year history. Coach King was awarded the prestigious QBL Coach of the Year award in 2009 and 2010.

Coach King was yesterday thrilled about the opportunity to guide the Wizards in the state’s top basketball competition.

"In 2011, the Wizards reached the QBL Semi-Finals, only to be beaten by Rockhampton. The club has built a good program and we want to contest the state title in 2012. I will be looking to build around the existing player base, and attract some other up and coming young players who are interested in being part of an exciting team."

The team will begin a pre-season training program before the Christmas holiday period.

The Head Coach of the Women's QBL team is expected to be announced in the next week.
