Payne pumped

THE IPSWICH Force will field an all-WNBL front line next season with the signing of Townville Fire forward Nadeen Payne.

Payne's signature comes hot on the heals of the re-signing of 2011 players player of the year Emma Langford who is currently playing with the Logan Thunder in the WNBL.

At only 18 years of age, the 188 centimetre forward is a perfect replacement for departing American import Ezria Parsons who has returned to the United States.

The former Australian Institute of Sport athlete said she was excited about heading to Ipswich for the QBL season.

"I spoke to a lot of people about Ipswich and the replies were that the club was really good and the community support is really good," Payne said.

"That's something I really want to be a part of. I love it when the community gets behind women's basketball, it's really positive.

"That's really what I'm all about, a strong community feel and people that really look after one another and this club is a really supportive club."

Despite her tender age, the Townsville native is a veteran of three seasons in the WNBL, two with the AIS and this year with the Townsville Fire.

She was also a member of the Australian Gems under-19 team that finished fourth at the world championships in Chile last year.

With Payne averaging more than seven points and three rebounds for the Fire, similar numbers to those Langford has delivered for the Thunder, the Force will be looking for the duo to form a strong offensive combination this season.

Langford, who turns 23 tomorrow, has also enjoyed a solid WNBL season after a slow start with new club Logan.

The former Adelaide Lightning player said after some injury problems early in the season, she was now finding some form with the Thunder, something she hoped would continue in her second season with the Force.

"Coming into a new team, it took a little while to fit in with the team and adjust to the style of play," Langford said.

"Since the Christmas break, my game has improved. I'm getting a few more minutes and I've been able to contribute a bit more."

Last year's leading scorer for the Force is also excited about the prospect of playing alongside the club's teenage recruit.

"Nadeen's a great player who will add a lot to our team. She should be a major scorer for the team and when you have a number of players who can all score, it will make us pretty hard to stop."

Coach Brad George has also secured the services of Cairns-born player Jade Kennedy in a further boost to the Ipswich front court.

The six-foot two-inch (188cm) forward was a college team mate of Langford in America and will line up for the Force after moving to south-east Queensland for work this year.
