Title defence a tough task

MACKAY Meteors coach Grant Kruger predicts his team will face stronger opponents this season as the club looks to win back-to-back QBL titles.

With the draw released and the players back on the training court, the McDonald's Meteors' campaign is well under way.

But the road to a second championship won't be an easy one.

Kruger said the likes of Townsville and Rockhampton were always dangerous, but this year there would be other threats too.

"I expect a lot of the southern teams to be a lot stronger this season," he said.

The QBL draw has the Meteors at home for their first six games and Kruger said that was an opportunity for the team to get off to a flying start.

"We're looking forward to hopefully getting a couple of early wins," he said.

The Mackay teams play Cairns in their opening games on May 11.

They then host Toowoomba, Rockhampton and Ipswich in the following rounds.

The latter is one game Kruger is particularly looking forward to, as former NBL star Shane Heal is now coach of the Ipswich outfit.

Kruger said the Meteors still had a few more players to secure to round out their 2012 team.
