Bears young guns shoot lights out

IT WAS the department of youth as the Bundaberg Radiology Bulls and Bears continued their pre-season preparations by hosting trial matches against Rockhampton on Saturday.

Bundaberg women's team the Bears had a good win over the Cyclones 63-43, but men's side the Bulls trailed the Rockets 74-51 when the stadium lights went off and officials called an early end to the match.

Bears assistant coach Brenton Edwards was handed the reins by doyen Dean Page for the day and he said they produced a "good performance".

"We only had four of our QBL girls playing, and our assistant coach Lucinda Doughty played as well, together with seven of our under-16 girls who are going to the Division 1 Classics in April," Edwards said.

Stalwart Kyle Giles was again "very good at point guard".

"Steph Rehbein was also fantastic. She kept the team together when she needed to. She is also assistant coach of the under-16s and was a steadying hand for them," he said.

"Of the juniors, Rhia Blair and Demi Jenkins were phenomenal in defence. Those two are part of the 15-strong women's squad and they definitely showed us tonight what they can do on the court."

Young Bull Michael Jenkin, 22, a new addition to their squad, said their coach Danny Page was also pleased despite their loss.

"We achieved all the goals we wanted to. It was unlucky we lost but we all worked hard but there will be quite a few changes to the squad before the season opener with the imports still to come," Jenkin said.

"Shane Davis had a good game and Nathan Marsh was strong but even though we had such a young squad, we need to shoot a bit better and play a bit smarter."
