QBL Men Round 2 Game Previews-

Toowoomba Mountaineers v Caboolture Suns, Sat 2nd May 7pm @ Toowoomba Basketball Stadium-
Despite dropping their Round 1 game against the Force, the Mountaineers should enter the ring here with a level of confidence.  A combination of the momentum that Anthony Tribe will bring (Round 1 Player of the Week) and the fact that the Suns import is sidelined for approximately 6 weeks (Martin Ajayi) after an accidental blow to the face, will have these two teams on even odds.  The Suns are 1-0 after a win over the Clippers (103-97) with Ben Houchin the offensive leader with 21pts @ 54%.  Michael O'Neill managed solid numbers in Round 1 for the Suns with 15pts, 6rbs, 9asts and Coach Ayanbadejo will need to ensure this was not just a one off.  Expect the Mountaineers to be hungry at home with the team in real need of a win here leading up to the super tough Cairns-Townsville road trip in Round 3.

Ipswich Force v South West Metro Pirates, Sat 2nd May 7pm @ Ipswich Basketball Stadium-
Ryan Stolberg was the pick of the bunch for the Force in Round 1 (31pts, 19rbs).  If Steven Broom and Luke Cann can crank things up to another level then this team stands to go a long way in 2009.  The Pirates had a dismal start to the year hitting 30% from the field in their loss to the Goannas last week (69-87) - compare this to the Cairns Marlins who managed an impressive 57% over their 2 games -indicates the Pirates may be fooling with a few early season teething issues .  Coach Cameron will be looking to Troy Thomson and Brendan Teys for more than what was shown in Round 1- both are very capable.  Ryan Jeffries has been a producer for the Force for a few years and at 23 years old he is shaping as a future star of the program- what this space!

Brisbane Capitals v Cairns Marlins, Sat 2nd May 7:45pm @ Vince Hickey Stadium-The Brisbane Capitals are being led by ex-Bullets coaching staff member Dale Ryan.  Coach Ryan gave good minutes to all 9 players in Round 1 to feel out strengths and weaknesses and was rewarded with a 108-100 win over the Wizards.  This level of coaching experience is a massive addition to the program and when push comes to shove on Saturday night against the Marlins expect to see the home team right on the mark.  The Cairns Marlins collected an early season double last week over Townsville and Mackay and now take on the Capitals where they will be looking to make it 3 and 0.  Dean Brebner and Aaron Grabau won't be easy to control but throw in Kerry Williams, Dwayne Vale and new recruit Deba George and you've got yourself an all-star line-up.  Make a mistake and the Marlins will punish you for it.

Maroochydore Clippers v Northside Wizards, Sat 2nd May 7:45pm @ Maroochydore Basketball Stadium-
Both the Clippers and Wizards are carrying losses into Round 2 but keep a close eye on this game is it could get personal.  Dante Sykes recently joined the Clippers and managed to grab 23pts, 6rbs, 7asts in Round 1.  In this game however he faces his former team mates and coaching staff with questions now floating around as to reasons for leaving the club he has played with for 2 seasons.  Expect alot of pressure to be centralised around Sykes which could bring about opportunities for Isaih Tueta to capitalise on.  Expect good things also if Zane Meehl shows up in a Clippers jersey.  The Wizards hate dropping games let alone one to their closest rival - the Brisbane Capitals.  This Round 1 loss will have them amped and ready to plough through the home team.  Tragardh and Davis need to get back into the groove they had in 2008 where the team went all the way to the Quarter Finals.

Gladstone Power v Townsville Heat, Sat 2nd May 7:45pm @ Kev Broome Stadium-
The Gladstone Power have built a strong base this year with Michael Kingma (15pts, 15rbs in Round 1), Aaron Nagas (28pts, 7rbs, 6asts, 3asts in Round 1) and James Cochran (21pts, 9rbs, 9asts in Round 1) making up the power core.  Throw Daniel Simanic into the mix who has a career-to-date average of 23pts, 6.7rbs and you've got a team that may shake the travelling Townsville Heat to the bone.  The Heat will be desperate to have Cameron Tovey suit up this weekend as this Gladstone / Rockhampton double has the ability to have them on a win/loss of 0 and 3 by Sunday night.  The team played in 3rd gear against the Marlins last week and it's time for Coach Rose to up the tempo on the squad who have much more than a snack on their hands here.

Gold Coast Goannas v Cairns Marlins, Sun 3rd May 2:00pm @ Tallebudgera Leisure Centre-
The Gold Coast Goannas have proven year after year that they are a solid team capable of an upset when it's least expected.  The team finished 10 and 8 in 2008 and well outside of finals contention.  This was off the mark for the Goannas who in 2007 went all the way to the Grand Final where the Cairns Marlins disposed of them in 2 games.  Scott McGregor and ex-Mountaineer David Gurney will be the focus of the Marlins coaching staff in this clash, as both have the ability to hit baskets from any range.  The Marlins are a professional outfit and back-to-back games will not faze them in the slightest.  Expect just as much juice here, as they'll apply on Saturday night.  Marlins could be early QBL front-runners at 4 and 0 if they can manage a successful weekend in Brisbane.

Rockhampton Rockets v Townsville Heat, Sun 3rd May 2:00pm @ Hegvold Stadium-
After watching from the sidelines in Round 1, the latest batch of Rocky Rockets will come bounding onto the court in Round 2, in a replay of the 2008 Grand Final where the Rockets defeated the Heat 97-80.  Rhys Martin returns and Coach Tweedy will be expecting atleast his QBL career average of 20pts, 6rbs, 4asts to kick the 2009 season off, and Jason Auccoin of the Gold Coast Goannas will suit up in Rockhampton colours for the first time.  Joining them will be US import Reggie Golson who could very well become one of the most well known imports in QBL history- expect big things from him on Sunday afternoon.  This team is, as yet, an unproven mix which means the Heat could get blindsighted if they are not careful.  However the Heat's Cedar, Susnjara and Tovey are elite players and will not back down to a fight.
