BECOME A REFEREE

Become a Referee

Barossa Basketball recruits new referees on a demand basis. We recruit new referees through an Expression of Interest process (outlined below) when there is demand for more referees and space to train new referees. To begin refereeing you must be a minimum of 12 years old.

Referee Expression of Interest Process

Barossa Basketball has an Expression of Interest process to begin refereeing. This was brought in due to the high demand we receive from people wanting to begin refereeing, and the fact that we only have limited space to take on board and train new referees. The expression of interest process is as follows:

1. Waitlist - the first step in the EOI process is leaving your name and contact details on a waitlist form to be notified when we open our expressions of interest for the next intake of referees. Please complete the form here.

2. Expression of Interest Form - the EOI form involves completing several questions to give us an understanding of who you are, why you want to begin refereeing, your previous basketball experience and your availability.

3. Meet and Greet Session - the meet and greet session is a 15min chat for us to get to know you a bit more and discuss your interest in becoming a referee for Barossa Basketball. We also explain the expectations of refereeing in the Barossa and there is also an opportuntity for you to ask questions. Parents are encouraged to attend this session as well.

4. Level 0 Course / Accreditation Certificate - the final stage of the EOI process is being invited to attend our next Level 0 Course and joining the Green Shirt Program (more details below). Alternatively, if you are already a current referee then the final stage is providing your referee accreditation certificate and then being invited to referee in the Barossa.

**Please note as we have limited space to take onboard new referees, that completing the EOI process does not guarantee you will be invited to start refereeing in the Barossa**

 Expectations of Barossa Basketball Referees

Barossa Basketball Referees are expected to at a minimum complete their Level 0 and Level 1C accreditations.

The Level 0 accreditation involves the following:

  • Level 0 Course
  • Level 0 Theory Exam
  • Level 0 Theory Booklet
  • On-court assessments

Once referees have completed their Level 0 accreditation they are required to work toward their Level 1C accreditation. This involves the following:

  • Level 1C Course
  • Level 1C Theory Exam
  • Level 1C Theory Booket
  • On-court assessments

Once referees have completed their Level 1C accreditation they graduate to a striped shirt.

 Green Shirt Program

The Green Shirt Program, an outcome of the Basketball Australia Coloured Shirt Program, aims to promote positive behaviour towards referees, especially beginner referees.

If you see referees wearing a green shirt then it’s important for you to know that they are beginners.

Please give them a chance to develop their skills without harassment or abuse as they are only just starting their development as an official. Be helpful and if you wish to provide constructive feedback, please do so via the correct channels – e.g. your club or association.

Aim of the Green Shirt Program:

  • Make new officials easily identifiable so that they are easy to recognise and support
  • Promote the program to the sports community to raise awareness and increase the recognition and support of new officials
  • Assist in reducing pressure and lessening abuse and conflict directed towards new officials
  • Create a culture of support towards these new officials via the education of players, spectators, coaches and the media about Codes of Conduct, Play By The Rules, Sideline Rage and Sport Rage.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
