PIES SHINE UNDER LIGHTS
By Louie Bulzomi
Werrimull remain undefeated after accounting for Cardross at Red Cliffs by 63 points, 18.15 (123) to 9.6 (60), in what was an intense contest early on.
The first quarter went goal-for-goal, with the Magpies edging ahead thanks largely to Mark Duscher’s two goals (including a pearler from the boundary on the run). For the Lions, Mark East gave plenty in attack after starting on the bench.
Cardross bagged the first of the second term, but Werrimull kicked three of the next four to ascend to a 15-point advantage. Adam Thomson, Michael Harradine and Ryan Tierney fought well for the Magpies, while Tom Wallace, Cameron Berry and Andrew Ferguson upheld the Lions’ challenge.
An arm-wrestle in the third saw Werrimull increase their lead by a solitary point as Brad Duscher, Paul Jenkins, Ben Ransome and Michael Laird began to influence the contest.
Despite centre clearance dominance, Cardross broke down up forward in the final term as Werrimull scored seven unanswered goals to win well. Mark Duscher finished with seven, while Harradine and Ransome were named best for their respective clubs.
Once again Nangiloc were gallant but fell short, this time to Gol Gol at home by 29 points, 19.8 (122) to 14.9 (93).
The first term belonged to the hard-running Demons, but their inaccurate return of 5.7 kept the Hawks alive. Jared Turvey was on top in the ruck, Luke Collett was solid in defence, and Ben Crosbie kept Sonny Lindsay quiet.
Gol Gol showed more in the second as Tim Vandenberg, Darren Brown and Shaun McInerney took charge in the middle. But Nangiloc held their nerve to lead by 12 at half time, with Adam Milne’s heroics in taking on three opponents, winning a free kick, and converting the main highlight.
Six goals to three in the third gave the Hawks the lead at the final change as Lindsay finally saw daylight to kick a couple. In a bitter blow for the Demons, Sam Lee was rushed to hospital with a split finger.
Gol Gol capitalised on Nangiloc’s rotation limitations in the last with 8.0 to 4.1 to claim victory. Lindsay ended up with eight, while Milne finished with six.
Euston toppled Bambill by 22 points, 15.9 (99) to 11.11 (77), in another Bomber-Saint classic at Euston.
Bambill took a 13-point advantage in the first thanks mainly to their seizing of opportunities created by many of Euston’s ‘kick and hope’ plays. Cleon Hannah was prominent in some courageous efforts for the Bombers, while Justin Merrett was dangerous through the midfield for the Saints.
A good old-fashioned spray by Toby Quirk-Meeks injected life into Euston in the second, as they kicked 6.3 to 1.4 to lead by 14. Ian Mennie kicked four, including a nice mark and candy-sell early in the term, while Phil Connell and Ryan McClelland each had their moments in the ruck.
The Bombers succumbed to old habits in the third as the Saints rebounded strongly to take the lead back. Jarrett Farley and Andrew Price led from the backline, Jason Hunt won clearance after clearance, and Chris Curran held his own against Joseph Denaro.
Euston rediscovered their second quarter form to kick away late in the final quarter with the last four goals. Their best included Mennie, Daniel Rogers and Connell, while Curran, McClelland and Jason Hahnel were honourable for Bambill.
Next week, Euston host Nangiloc, Werrimull and Gol Gol collide at Lake Cullulleraine and Bambill play Cardross at Mildura Senior College.
