TRAVEL BUG STINGS BOMBERS AGAIN
By Louie Bulzomi
It was Pink Footy Round, but Euston saw red after another away loss – 66 points to Cardross, 21.11 (137) to 10.11 (71), at Henshilwood Oval.
10 goals to 2 in the opening term exemplified the Lions’ controlled intensity, with their impressive forward pressure and tackling creating many scoring opportunities. Mark East chimed in with 3, while Tom Wallace and Jayden Boehm were extremely effective.
The Bombers were reeling without Phil Connell, Anthony McMahon, Daniel Rogers and Jacob Harris, but fought hard in the second with Tom Healy, Harlan Pettit and Steven Howell providing backline drive. Cardross, though, had the answers to lead by 56 at half-time, courtesy of Jake Zoch’s ruckwork, Cody Dalla Santa’s rebounding, and Ben Aworth’s efforts at ground level.
Goals to Josh Healy and Ian Mennie gave Euston hope in the third, but Cardross again took control via Darren McCarthy, Boehm, Wallace and J.Zoch to establish an unassailable 60-point advantage.
The match petered out in the last as the majority of play remained between the arcs. Wallace received best on ground honours for the Lions, while J.Healy flew the flag for the Bombers.
Gol Gol elevated to second place on the ladder with a stern 44-point home win over Bambill, 15.13 (103) to 8.11 (59).
The Hawks started well but couldn’t inflict scoreboard pressure, allowing the Saints to hit the front midway through the first thanks to Luke Keating’s 2 goals and the defensive brilliance of Nathan Davis and Luke Hubble. But Gol Gol eventually took the lead back, with Dustin Duggan and Blayk Rhodes playing well.
After Dean McDowall scored an immediate goal for Gol Gol in the second, their next didn’t arrive until time-on. Despite this, Bambill failed to goal at all even with Michael Hickey and Danny Auricht repelling many Hawk attacks.
Another arm-wrestle ensued in the third, with the Hawks extending their 31-point half-time lead by 4. Luke Stanbrook and the returning David Hall gave plenty to spark the Saints, but Tim Vandenberg and Darren Brown were equal to the task.
Bambill rolled the dice one more time with the first 2 goals of the final quarter to Stanbrook and Hickey, but goals to Rhodes and Daniel Svrta ended any hope. Sonny Lindsey kicked 7, while Keating was the only multiple goalkicker for Bambill.
It was a Duscher trifecta at Nangiloc, as Werrimull inflicted a 94-point thumping on the Demons, 25.18 (168) to 10.14 (74).
Ben lined up alongside Brad and Mark, and all three impacted the scoreboard in the first quarter. The Magpies appeared somewhat lethargic, however, as Nangiloc battled manfully to trail by just 13 despite Tristan Stephens being stretchered off very early in the piece.
It was an uphill battle for the Demons in the second, as they kicked just 1.5 and conceded 10.4. The Duschers continued their triple-teaming dominance, seven Magpies kicked goals, and Paul Jenkins led the back-half advances.
Nangiloc were recharged in the third, as they matched Werrimull stride for stride and went goal-for-goal. Luke Collett and Ben Tallent were sensational in providing support for usual leaders Jared Turvey, Ben Mansell, Jamie Riordan and Cameron Peters as the deficit increased by just 5 points.
But the steam had evaporated in the last as the Magpies kicked 6.4 to 2.5 to cruise to a near three-figure victory. M.Duscher finished with 8 majors, while Turvey was Nangiloc’s best.
Next week, Nangiloc host Cardross, Gol Gol welcome Euston, and Werrimull and Bambill battle at the Lake.
