MAGPIES SILENCE LIONS’ ROAR
By Louie Bulzomi
Cardross missed their opportunity to consolidate fourth spot, defeated by ladder leaders Werrimull by 71 points, 22.10 (142) to 10.11 (71), at Henshilwood Oval.
While both sides showed clean passages of play in the first quarter, the Magpies made their passages count, kicking 8.3 to 1.3. Mark Duscher, Adam Thomson and Courtney Moore shared seven between them, capping off the fine midfield work of Brad Duscher, Shannon Anthony and Paul Jenkins.
Evan Pitt, Michael Laird and Brady Dalla Santa tried to will the Lions back into the contest in the second term, but the deficit blew out to 72 by half time as Werrimull continued to dominate the centre clearances and apply relentless pressure.
Cardross still couldn’t break free in the third, although Ben Aworth found a few gaps to set up two of their three goals. For Werrimull, Jenkins broke two tackles and ran into goal for the highlight of the day.
In the last term, the Lions kicked 5.1 to put some respectability on the scoreboard as the Magpies released the pressure valve. M.Duscher kicked six and Thomson four for Werrimull, while Laird and Eamonn Higgins were named Cardross’ best.
Euston suffered their fourth consecutive loss, belted by 96 points by Bambill, 25.14 (164) to 10.8 (68), at Mildura Senior College.
In a see-sawing first quarter, the Saints snuck in two late goals to lead by 14. The new twin-tower combo of David Hall and Luke Stanbrook kicked the lot, while Ian Mennie and Linden Duryea booted all of the Bombers’ majors.
Simon Kelly and Steve Sellens were dominating both wings in the second, as Euston were sorely missing Bryce Denaro through injury. Hall kicked three more as Bambill threatened to make things ugly. But thanks to Joseph Denaro, Josh Healy and Daniel Curran, the Bombers hung in to trail by 20.
The Saints blitzed the early minutes of the third, kicking the first three en route to a 43-point advantage. Michael Hickey worked his way into the game for a couple of goals, and Andrew Gibson ran all around the forward 50 but managed just one kick.
Euston virtually went into the showers during the final term, failing to score while Bambill kicked 8.5. Hall finished with 11 and Stanbrook six for the Saints, while Luke Benham impressed on debut for the Bombers.
Gol Gol added more pain to Nangiloc’s season, thrashing them by 105 points, 26.12 (168) to 9.9 (63), at home.
It looked to be a long day for the Demons when Sonny Lindsey bagged the first two goals of the game. But Cameron Peters and Scott Golding then lifted to help keep the margin to a commendable 14 points.
The second quarter was predominantly all Gol Gol who kicked the first eight, courtesy of the likes of Lindsey, Daniel Svrta, Nick Rodi and David Gray. Mark Hooper and Clint Burdett were also terrific as Nangiloc were lacking contributors.
The Demons didn’t completely give up, matching the Hawks stride for stride in the third. Cameron Cox, Troy Francis and Kurt Freer were lively, but Burdett, Hooper and Lindsey ensured the 49-point margin remained intact.
The last quarter was all Gol Gol, who kicked 9.3 to 0.1 to boost their percentage dramatically. Lindsey ended up with 13 majors to take his season tally to 67, while Golding was named Nangiloc’s best.
Next week, Gol Gol host Werrimull, Bambill host Cardross, and Nangiloc host Euston.
