PIES CLIP HAWKS’ WINGS
By Louie Bulzomi
Werrimull overturned a six-goal deficit midway through the second quarter to emphatically trounce Gol Gol by 62 points, 25.10 (160) to 15.8 (98), at Carramar Drive.
After goals to Adam Thomson and Sonny Lindsey early in the first, the ball remained between the 50m arcs for many minutes with the hardness of both teams causing plenty of turnovers. Eventually the Hawks broke away to a 24-point advantage thanks to two long-range Dustin Duggan goals.
The Magpies struggled to get past centre as goals to David Gray and Lindsey early in the second gave the impression that Gol Gol were set for a big win. But all of a sudden a complete 180 degree turn occurred – Werrimull booted nine of the next 11 goals to take a six-point lead at half-time.
Momentum continued in the third for the Magpies, kicking 5.3 to 1.2 and restricting the Hawks’ drive. Mark Duscher, Jamie Keenan and Paul Jenkins provided scoring power, while Ryan Tierney and Graeme Mentiplay controlled the midfield.
Another nine goals to four in the last underlined Werrimull’s outright premiership favouritism. M.Duscher ended with seven to lead eleven goalkickers, while Lindsey kicked nine amongst only four Gol Gol goalkickers.
Bambill chalked up their fourth consecutive win, downing Cardross by 31 points, 15.14 (104) to 10.13 (73), at Mildura Senior College.
Simon Dean kicked the Saints’ first, but the Lions responded with goals to Shaun Cummins, Jayden Boehm and Eamon Higgins. Despite Ryan McClelland getting the better of the ruck duels with Jake Zoch, Bambill wasted opportunities as Cardross held a 3-point lead at quarter-time.
After Boehm was sent off for over-aggression, the Lions began to lose steam as the Saints got on top in the middle through Jason Hunt, Robbie Morgan and Justin Merrett. Along with timely David Hall and Luke Hubble marks, Bambill wrested control to lead by 19 at the long break.
Despite Jake Drewett’s phenomenal third quarter, Cardross fell 21 points further behind by three-quarter time. The major highlights belonged to Andrew Gibson, who kicked three absolute pearlers.
The Lions lifted once more via Ben Aworth and Brady Dalla Santa. But the Saints held sway with Simon Kelly and Michael Hickey ensuring the victory and second spot on the ladder.
Euston re-entered the four with a hard-fought 10-point away win over Nangiloc, 14.12 (96) to 13.8 (86).
Although once again restricted for rotations with just two on the bench, the Demons started well with David Keens kicking three goals and Cameron Peters racking up the possessions. But through the agencies of Chris Moore, Linden Duryea and Daniel Curran, the Bombers ended the first 10 points up.
The second term was relatively even, but Euston extended their lead to 17 points. Peter Marciano, Tom Healy and Cameron Browne were prominent, while Hamish Dowdy and Troy Francis were solid for Nangiloc.
Another arm-wrestle ensued in the third as the Bombers maintained their three-goal advantage. Ian Mennie’s spectacular Maradonna-like kick which hit the post told the story of his day. For the Demons, Hayden Falconer’s ruckwork was superb.
Nangiloc threw everything at Euston in the final term, but ultimately fell painstakingly short of their first win. Duryea’s six goals, Curran’s desperation and Moore and Marciano’s rebounding were vital for Euston, while Keens’ eight goals, Peters’ disposal accumulation and Ben Crosbie’s defensive efforts kept Nangiloc in the contest.
Next week, Euston host Cardross, Gol Gol host Bambill, and Werrimull host Nangiloc.
