After winning their round robin game 6 – 1 against North Harbour, Canterbury went into this game with some confidence.
Unfortunately, the game did not go to script and North Harbour opened the scoring in the 4th minute after creating numbers on the right side, draw and pass, and Peter Smith-West scoring in the corner. Halftime score was 1 – 0 North Harbour.
Five minutes into the second half, the damage was doubled for Canterbury with North Harbour number 14 Steve Kem stepping back and diving between the Canterbury middles to score.
At the 12 minute mark, the game was effectively over when Stephen Huggins was on the end of a draw and pass sequence of play and scored the 3rd North Harbour touchdown.
This game was punctuated by a series of heavy touches, with a number of defensive players sprawled on the ground at the ruck. The referees asserted their control and kept the aggression in check, to contribute to an entertaining spectacle. Final score 3 - 0 to North Harbour.
