A critical game for both teams wanting a win to secure a place in the Finals against Waikato this afternoon. With an early morning game scheduled the ground conditions were slippery with morning dew on the top of the field.
13 minutes into the game saw the first touchdown scored by Counties #6 Tiana Roger-Rhind on the wing following quick hands/passes creating an overlap on the wing.
The handling error numbers were creeping up with the ball becoming slippery.
Tiana Rogers-Rhind #6 Counties crossed the line for the second touchdown of the first half with the assist to #3 Melissa Buchanan from a draw and pass play.
Half time was 2-0 to Counties. The first half saw a slower paced game from both sides, with good yards.
The second half saw Wellington score their first touchdown to #2 Keisha Grant from a low dive, catching the defence too wide to cover. They followed this up with the next touchdown to #9, the touchdown was set up from a intercept run-away, resulting in counties defence being stretched and an overlap on the wing occurring. The game was drawn at 2 all.
Counties responded with a touchdown to #6, scoreline 3-2. Wellington were quick to respond bringing the scoreline back to 3 all with only 5 minutes left in the second half.
At full time the score was 3-3 and a drop off was required.
First possession of the ball went to Counties seeing #5 Kahurangi Watene cross the line with a beautiful aerial dive for a touchdown. They went on defence immediately with Wellington taking possession of the ball. Wellington were unable to cross the line. Leaving the final score at 4-3 to Counties and the Finals qualifying spot going to Counties.
