This was the game of the day in the women’s division. It was certainly a game of 2 Halves with Waikato showing a lot of determination and courage and most of all: skill. Waikato’s Liliian Pompey set the tone for Waikato setting up 2 tries. Canterbury was finding it hard to get any rhythm going and they paid for it dearly with Waikato putting on 3 more tries before the halftime break and a commanding 5-0 lead.
Canterbury Women’s Coach set up tone for the 2nd half the huddle was very quiet for 2 minutes. Canterbury came out firing putting on a try in the first minute. Canterbury #4 Kelsey Berryman stepped up to the plate and set up 3 tries her blistering pace was hard for Waikato to control. Canterbury pulled the lead back by scoring 3 more tries to even it all up 6-6 with one minute to go. Waikato looked exhausted and had one more chance as Lillian Pompey scooped from dummy and passed off to Carla Hohepa to score the winning touchdown for Waikato moment before the hooter sounded full time.
