DOHA:  THE 18th Season Men’s Basketball Championship of Pinoy Basketball of Qatar (Pibaq) featuring 22 teams will kick off at Al-Gharafa training Gym on Friday.

The opening of the new season with the theme ‘Isang Dekada ng Barkadahan’ and presented by Power Horse Energy Drink will be graced by Philippine Ambassador to Qatar HE Wilfredo C. Santos.

At a press conference held at Plaza Inn Hotel on Wednesday, Pibaq founder and chairman, Pat Carido, said the new season will feature fresh format to mark Pibaq’s celebration of it’s 10th anniversary on November 17.

He added that seven teams will compete in Pibaq’s Elite Division, eight teams in aspirants division and seven teams in the highly-anticipated 18U League.

The new season of Pibaq will feature former professional, commercial, collegiate and amateur players back in the Philippines in its Elite Division. A number of former stage cagers back home are known to be active supporters of Pibaq.

“This season is one of the most important events for Pibaq with the successful run of the league for the youth (in its second season) and the newly-introduced categories, Elite and Aspirants. The followers of Pibaq can expect new format and more giveaways and surprises,” Carido said.

They added to the excitements and thrill of the most popular Filipino basketball group in the country.

The Aspirant division will feature non-professional players who have the potential to be in the elite group.

Carido also hailed the league’s new season which gives opportunity to engage Filipino youth in sport, foremost, basketball which is the number one sport in the Philippines.

“Our programme for the youth is much-awaited by parents and other supporters of Pibaq. We have one youth player now with San Beda College in Manila who we hope to be playing with the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) next year. Pibaq is an ideal community project that helps our compatriots to resort to worthwhile activities through sport. Aside from keeping the spirit of basketball alive, our group is foremost in extending a helping hand to our compatriots in need especially during calamities,” Carido added.

Representatives of the sponsors of the new season including from Ooredoo and Diana Jewellery were also present at the press conference.
