GEELONG REGION FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROUND 12 PREVIEW

NEW Mens Division One league leader, Deakin Ducks, will take on third placed Surfside Waves in this weekend’s Round 12 ‘Match of the Day’ on Sunday.

The students will not only be buoyed by the fact that they find themselves in top spot of the GRFC’s premier division, but this week the expanding Waurn Ponds based club was boosted by the news that a new world class synthetic pitch will be installed at Deakin University in time for the commencement of the 2016 season.

The Waves, meanwhile, are just one point behind Deakin and will hope the neutral venue will aid its chances of jumping into top spot on the ladder. The game has been moved to Torquay’s Banyul Warri Reserve, due to the state of Deakin’s ground, with the kick-off time set for 3:00pm.

In the other Division One match that could have a direct impact on the makeup of the top four after this weekend, 4th placed Barwon SC is at home to 2nd placed Geelong Rangers at Grovedale Reserve. Drysdale SC will meanwhile host Breakwater Eagles in a 5th versus 6th clash at Howard Glover Reserve.

All games have a 3:00pm kick-off. Bottom side Corio SC has the bye.

 DIVISION TWO:

Surf Coast FC travels to the Lake Reserve in St Leonards on Sunday, where the hungry Bellarine Sharks will be waiting to sink their teeth into the current Division Two competition leaders.

The Torquay side is four points clear of second placed Barwon Heads, but a slip-up in St Leonards could prove dangerous, with the confident Hammerheads away to 7th placed Bell Park at 1:00pm. Kick-off for the Bellarine-Surf Coast encounter is set down for 3:00pm.

In other games, Howard Glover Reserve plays host to the Drsydale-Lara clash at 1:00pm, the Elcho Park Cardinals will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they host Barwon Blue at Elcho Park (3:00pm), while Deakin Ducks take on Breakwater Eagles at the White Eagle Club at 3:00pm

 DIVISION THREE:

Top dog, Geelong SC, travels to Ocean Grove to tackle third placed Surfside Waves in the pick of the action in Division Three this weekend. The Friday night game, at Shell Road Reserve, will be held under lights and, with a 6:30pm kick-off, will officially get the weekend’s Round 12 under way.

In the other Division Three match of high significance, 6th placed Lara SC hosts 7th placed Bellarine Sharks at Lara Recreation Reserve on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 1:00pm.

 WOMEN’S DIVISION:

Despite losing its home ground advantage, as a result of the bad state of their University Top Fields pitch, the fourth placed Deakin Ducks will nonetheless be aiming for all three points when they take on second placed Barwon SC in the Round 12 Women’s ‘Match of the Day’ at Grovedale Reserve on Saturday.

Deakin, which sits in 4th spot on 23 points is just four points behind the Blue and Whites and a victory on Saturday will bridge the gap to only one point. Kick-off is at 1:00pm.

In other Women’s competition games, 5th placed Geelong SC Red is away to the 7th placed Breakwater Eagles (3:00pm), top team Kardinia International College is at home to lowly Surf Coast (1:00pm) at its Bell Post Hill campus, bottom side Corio Bay hosts 3rd placed Surfside Waves at Howard Glover Reserve (1:00pm) and the Village Park in Barwon Heads will play host to the clash between the local Barwon Heads SC and the visiting 9th placed Geelong SC at 1:00pm.
