NEWS: Revamped GRFC Women's Div 1 comp kicks off this weekend

A REVAMPED 8-team GRFC Women’s Division 1 competition kicked-off an exciting new season under lights last night as Surfside Waves hosted Geelong SC, who are hoping to improve significantly upon a disappointing 2016 season, resulting in just one win.

Gina Murphy’s Waves squad will look to begin 2017 with a bang against a Geelong SC side that remained bottom at the close of the season, registering just eight goals for 2016.

The game was played late last night at Shell Road Reserve, at time of publishing this article, the score was not yet known.

Deakin Ducks FC v Kardinia International College

Saturday April 22nd (Deakin University, 3pm)

SATURDAY'S  fixtures open with an enthralling first vs second grudge match from the previous season, as Deakin Ducks FC welcome Kardinia to their immaculate Waurn Ponds Elite Sporting Facility. Kardinia will be aiming for revenge on the free-scoring Ducks, who ran away with the championship in 2016, notching over 86 goals and conceding just three, have again assembled a strong squad. Kardinia however, will be keen to regain their mantle of the leading Women’s club in the local Geelong competition. The flawless $8million dollar Deakin facility will again be an intimidating venue to face the Ducks, and Saturday’s fixture sets the scene for a captivating season 2017.

Barwon SC v Surf Coast FC

Saturday April 22nd (Grovedale Reserve – 3pm)

Barwon SC kick-starts their 2017 Women’s Division 1 campaign in front of their home support at Grovedale against newly promoted Surf Coast FC, under the management of Mariela Pocklington. Anyone expecting a one-sided game at Grovedale Reserve is most definitely in for a shock, with Surf Coast FC falling just one point short of eventual Division 2 champions Barwon Heads SC, playing some expansive free-flowing football while nearly impenetrable through the back-four.

Drysdale SC v Barwon Heads SC

Saturday April 22nd (Howard Glover Reserve - 3pm)

Another newly promoted side and Division 2 Champions last year in Barwon Heads SC face a resurgent Drysdale SC under the management of Craig Riley, who will be looking to improve considerably upon their third place finish last season. This concludes the Women’s Division 1 first round, with an exciting 2017 season in prospect.
