A step closer to top spot

Shepparton News

Shepparton's 4-1 victory over Shepparton United on Sunday has it pushing Cobram Victory for top spot in North Eastern Soccer League's men's division one, but coach Andy Ingham said all his team could do is win and hope other results fall its way.

Having already secured second position, earning it a double chance, Shepparton's is now within one point of top spot with three rounds to go.

``I am pleased with the three points. I wasn't to fussed about how we got it,'' Ingham said.

``We are pretty close at the top of the ladder, so hopefully we can get the six points from our final two matches. It is out of our hands, but if we keep winning and Cobram drop some we will finish on top.''

Ingham said while the weekend's victory was a team effort, he said Stuart Vance's hat-trick was the stand-out.

``Vance played really well with three goals, he was outstanding,'' he said.

``Jarrod (Moore) in goal was excellent and our defence was very good especially in the first half.''

Ingham scored the other goal for Shepparton, while Ermal Shahollari was United's only goal-scorer.

Ingham said despite the result the game was a lot closer than the scoreline would suggest and United was still favourite to finish fourth despite slipping to fifth.

United is only two points behind Tatura, with both teams having two matches left, one each against Cobram Victory and the other being a showdown between the two in the last round which will decide the final four.

``They have some big games ahead, but the way they have played I imagine they would creep back into the top four,'' Ingham said.

United coach George Traianidis said he also expected the finals make up wouldn't be decided until the last round.

``It is a bit exciting with the match against Tatura coming in the last round,'' he said.

``Hopefully the week off will allow us to freshen up and get everyone right.''

Traianidis said his side had the form, but needed to convert its chances.

``We had three or four golden chances in the first half against Shepparton. I think we played brilliantly, we just didn't put them away.''
