A stunning strike

Shepparton News

A long bomb from David Davkovski has given Shepparton a 1-0 win against Shepparton South and kept the Reds entrenched in the top two of North Eastern Soccer League's men's division one.

Davkovski, a defender, scored from the centre circle with a surprise strike that caught the Shepparton South backline off guard.

Shepparton held its lead to the end against a South team that was wasteful in attack and failed to make an impact against a resolute Reds defence.

The win means Shepparton stays within a point of ladder-leader Cobram Victory, the Reds with 30 points just one behind Victory on 31.

The win also moved Shepparton a step closer to a qualifying final date with Victory, still five points clear in second ahead of Shepparton United on 25 and eight ahead of South on 22.

Such a good trick

Samantha McIntosh's second hat-trick of the season has kept Shepparton well clear in fourth place on the North Eastern Soccer League's women's ladder after a 4-0 win against Shepparton South at the weekend.

Suzan Tanrikulu scored the other Shepparton goal as the comprehensive win took the Reds to a commanding seven-point lead in fourth place from fifth-placed Cobram Victory.

The treble takes McIntosh's season tally to 11 goals, level in equal second on the goal-scorers' table with Cobram's Tania Doyle.

Shepparton United moved to a perfect 12 wins from 12 in the weekend's other match as it beat Kyabram 5-0.

Jess Theobald scored two goals for the Blues to take her season's tally to 25, while Allyson Newton scored two and Dana Karolidis one.

Lagana at double

Former Shepparton South player Frankie Lagana became the sixth player to reach double figure goals in the Victorian Premier League at the weekend as he scored in Oakleigh Cannons' 2-0 win against Australian Institute of Sport.

Lagana has 10 goals for the year, four off the pace of competition leader Pablo Cardozo of Richmond.

Oakleigh secured its standing in the top six with the win, the Cannons have 32 points in fourth position, four ahead of seventh-placed AIS on 28.

Spain rules Euro

Spain captured its first major tournament since 1964 with victory against Germany in the final of Euro 2008 yesterday morning.

A Fernando Torres goal in the first half gave the Spaniards a 1-0 lead they would hold to the finish.
