Shepparton will have to fight for the double chance after a 6-2 loss against runaway ladder-leader Shepparton United allowed Cobram to move into second place on the North Eastern Soccer League women's ladder.

United was too strong for its home-town rival taking a 3-0 lead into half-time and despite Shepparton scoring twice in the second half, United managed to pile on three more goals to take the victory.

Jess Theobald was the stand-out for United scoring a triple, with Allyson Newton, Megan Carr and Imogen Head one each.

Samantha McIntosh scored Shepparton's two goals.

Shepparton coach Steve Hawkes said his side was taught a lesson, but believes it is good preparation for the finals.

``We didn't play bad, we just had a few lapses in concentration, that's where we got hurt. We didn't defend as well, but all in all there were a lot of positives and we now have something to work on,'' Hawkes said.

He said there were a few areas where United could be beaten and while it is an awesome team, he believes it can be beaten.

``Cobram proved that a few weeks ago, but you have to be at the top of your game to beat them. You can't have a day off,'' he said.

While there were some of positives coming out of the game for Shepparton, the loss means it slips down to third place after Cobram beat Tatura 2-0 at Tatura.

Both sides now sit on 36 points, but with Cobram's impressive 30 goals this year it maintains a goal difference of 24, 11 ahead of Shepparton on 13.

With three rounds left, both sides have two matches against bottom four sides, separated by a match between the two at Cobram Showgrounds in a fortnight which looks likely to decide who finishes in second.

Hawkes said while it was disappointing for Shepparton to lose its grip on second position, he said with only goal difference between the sides Shepparton was still looking good for the double chance.

``We still have to play Cobram, so I'm pretty certain the winner of that match will get the double chance,'' Hawkes said.

``We will be aiming for that game.''
