Rovers’ finals hopes dashed

Benalla's one and only participant in its return season of Goulburn North East Football Association has been knocked out after a 2-0 loss in the junior girls' division at Barooga on Sunday.

The Rovers join Kyabram, Numurkah and Cobram as teams without finals participants to follow in any grade after the latter three failed to have a team qualify.

Benalla returned to the Goulburn North East association this year after leaving the then-North Eastern Soccer League in 1994 to play Albury Wodonga league.

Amelia Cassidy and Chloe Mathieson were Victory's two goal-scorers, keeping last year's runner-up in contention for a return to grand final day.

Victory kept its finals hopes alive in more than just the junior girls though as it also won men's division two 4-2 in a fiery encounter with Tatura.

Travis Luff, Muhammed Maarj, Josh Williams and an own goal took Victory to the preliminary final, while Tatura imploded with two players red carded in the second half.

Shepparton's under-14 boys were too strong for Tatura as they eliminated the Ibises 7-1 with two goals each to Marcus Scott and Monga Maulidi and one each to Trent Dimitropoulos, Murat Tanrikulu and Carlo Meola.

Tatura was more fortunate in under-16s, however, as it eliminated Shepparton South 3-2.

James Nicholson, Josh Morritt and Sedat Ciftci were Tatura's goal-scorers, while Shaun Duncan scored both goals for South.

The under-12s also went Tatura's way with Imran Fasal scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win against Cobram Victory.
