Shepparton News

Shepparton has thrown down the gauntlet to Shepparton South in the battle for a top-two finish in women's Goulburn North East Football Association by defeating Benalla 2-0 at the weekend.

Shepparton United is within reach of its fourth minor premiership in a row after its 1-0 win against Tatura kept the finals race open going into the last round of the season.

A double-strike from Suzan Tanrikulu on Sunday was enough for Shepparton to see off Benalla, ending the Rovers' slim finals chances and moving the Reds into second with 30 points from Shepparton South on 29.

Shepparton has the bye next weekend, meaning it will be sweating on Tatura to beat Shepparton South - a draw or better and the Southerners will claim second place.

South drew 2-2 with Cobram at the weekend, goals to Jacklyn Lombardozzi and Maddy McGuffie pegged back by Tigers Tania Doyle and Pina Papalia.

At Howley Oval, a penalty from Allyson Newton was enough to get Shepparton United past a Tatura team still battling to secure fourth position.

Shepparton United moved to 31 points with the win.

If it defeats lastplaced Kyabram next weekend it will seal the minor premiership.

Tatura has 24 points in fourth, ahead of Cobram Victory on 23 after Victory downed Numurkah 2-1 on Sunday.

Numurkah pushed Victory with Ashley Dick scoring for the Knights, but goals to Hayley Cornish and Imogen Head got Victory across the line.

The Ibises will miss the finals if they fail to beat Shepparton South next weekend and Victory beats cross-town rival Cobram.

If Cobram beats Victory next weekend it could draw level with Tatura on 24 points, however, the Tigers are 12 goals difference behind the Ibises.
