South’s double reason to celebrate

Shepparton News

Shepparton South has a double celebration this weekend as it reflects on winning the men's division one minor premiership in Goulburn North East Football Association and remembers its 1999 flag.

South's 2-2 draw with Shepparton last weekend gave the Southerners an unassailable lead at the top of the ladder with 29 points to Shepparton's 22.

Success in the association's top division leads what could be a stellar year for the Southerners, across seven grades all its teams are finals bound and as a club it has lost just seven matches for the season.

While it would be a stretch to say it harks back to the 1999 season where South swept all five premierships on offer, this year does have the makings of a big one for the club that took home three titles (division two, under-12 boys and junior girls) last campaign.

South coach Paul Amadei said the 1999 reunion tomorrow would not be a distraction from his team's match against last-placed Numurkah on Sunday.

"There won't be any experimenting," Amadei said.

"I thought some of our players did not perform to the best of their ability against Shepparton, if there are changes it will be because of form.

"We have guys like JA (Joel Aitken) and Tommy (Tennant) who are on the bench that could get a game at any other club."

Amadei, who coached South's hat-trick from 1999 to 2001, said the principle of trying to play the game how it should be played was still upheld at South now.

"To be top is always a good feeling," Amadei said.

"The reality is, the longer you go unbeaten, the closer you are to your first loss."

In other men's division one matches, Cobram travels to Central Park to play Shepparton United while Shepparton is away to Cobram Victory at Barooga.

Victory will be without its playmaker Cameron Miles who is out with suspension, while winger Joey Crea will also be on the sidelines after being redcarded last weekend.

L The 1999 reunion is at the Goulburn Valley Hotel tomorrow night, starting at 6 pm with tickets $40 for adults and discounted for youth.
